SERMON SERIES:
Discipleship on the Road

Bible Passage: Luke 18:9-14

Reflection Questions (use with your small group or on your own):

  1. This parable highlights two characters: a Pharisee and a tax collector. What is your initial response to hearing those two titles?
  2. In the parable, the Pharisee (the one who is serious about God) is self-righteous, while the tax collector (seen as “the enemy”) is humble and repentant. Do you often judge others wrongly, based on what’s on the outside or what their title is?
  3. What is your posture when you come to God in prayer? Are you more like the Pharisee or the tax collector?
  4. How do you view God when you pray? What does He look like? What expression is on His face?
  5. Jonathan said, “When a person believes deep in their heart that God accepts them because of the good things they’ve done, they will ALWAYS regard others with contempt.” Do you agree or disagree? What does this look like?

Remember the Truth:

“Jesus is the one who pronounces you forgiven and redeemed, who offers you new life, not because of the good deeds you’ve done, not because the virtues outweigh the vices, but because the blood of Jesus washes you clean.” (Pastor Jonathan)
